Those found in citrus fruits are very sensitive to heat and need a gentle touch! This means distillation can’t be used to obtain these essential oils. Citrus rinds are covered in little oil-filled sacs, which can be seen with the naked eye. Expression involves using 001 - a sweet floral cologne 001 - a sweet floral cologne orange blossom petit grain bergamot 001 pressure to pierce these tiny bubbles. The mixture is then decanted to collect just the oily portion, which is lighter than water. Like oil and vinegar, two different phases are created. Prior to industrialization, expression was carried out by hand using a very tedious process called “sponge-pressing”. The rinds of citrus fruits were rubbed with a sponge, which soaked up the oil and juice. It was then wrung out, draining the water and allowing the oil to be collected.

Did you know?

Around 1,500 bergamots are needed to obtain 1 kg (2.2 lbs) of essence! Coming for the most part from Calabria, Italy, it reveals different notes depending on the plot where it is grown: fresher in the south and more floral in the north. This involves the use of a distillation unit to steam the rose petals and release their aroma compounds. The steam saturated with essence is then directed into a condenser and cooled down. The steam condenses and becomes a liquid, meaning the essential oil is collected drop by drop in an essence jar. For the absolute, the rose petals are macerated in a volatile organic solvent. After evaporation occurs, the material becomes a paste called the concrete. This substance contains all the rose’s odorous and oily constituents. The concrete is then macerated in alcohol to extract all the aroma compounds. Cardamom is considered to be a cold spice, unlike cinnamon, cumin, cloves or nutmeg, for example. It has a slightly green, initially camphoric, terpenic scent, which is what earned the spice this label. Juniper berry also belongs to this family and injects real vigor. Karine Dubreuil Sereni used this spice in our 004 to recreate the idea of an icy gin. Perfumers use these fresh and explosive notes to structure the openings to their creations, drawing on warmer ones to build the heart and body of fragrances. Warm ingredients also add sensuality. Sandalwood is a soft, milky, mild and sweet wood that thrills us to the core! What makes it special is its very long trail. White sandalwood has a long history, originating in India over 4,000 years ago. The tree must grow for more than 30 years before its wood can be distilled and its essence enjoyed. The finest sandalwood is cultivated in Mysore in the Chamundi foothills in the south of the country. While revered around the world, it is strictly controlled by the government. A victim of its own success, sandalwood is becoming increasingly rarer. After heavy consumption, its production and export have declined over the last decade. In India, temple doors and sculptures are made from this mystical wood. Imagine the sublime soft scent that wafts through these special surroundings. Here, cumin introduces an animalistic dimension.

What is amber?

Amber reminds us of the scents of ambergris and oriental fragrances. Sandalwood is an integral part of religious rituals and wedding ceremonies.

Top

Cypress
Cumin
Ylang Ylang
Thyme
Cardamom

Heart

Jasmine
Coconut
Cedar

Base

Sandalwood
Benzoin
Patchouli
Amber
